What Happens Once Surgical Date is Confirmed

The surgeon’s office will contact you directly to offer a date for surgery. Once this date is confirmed, they will inform Chinook Bone and Joint Clinic where you will be scheduled for your pre op appointment.

At this appointment, you will meet with a nurse who will collect health information from you to update your medical chart, and will provide information about pre op testing, consult appointments, medication instructions, and other surgical preparations. You will also see a kinesiologist who will help arrange for equipment you will require post op and get you started on exercises to perform before and after your surgery.

Please consult your surgeon’s office for medical leave requests and other relevant paperwork requiring signature.

Some other items to note leading up to your surgery:

Dental Work

To prevent surgical delays, the surgeons are encouraging patients to complete any dental work, including cleanings, at least 6-8 weeks prior to your surgical date. If there are any concerns regarding your dental health, please contact your surgeon’s office ASAP.

Injections

Please avoid all injections in your surgical joint for 3 months prior to your surgery due to risk of infection. Injections in other areas of the body should be avoided within 4 weeks of your surgical date.

Length of Hospital Stay

Most patients will spend one night in the hospital. This means you could be discharged as early as 9am the day following your surgery. Please ensure you have a ride arranged.

Home Preparations

Ensure frequently used items are easily accessible, quick and simple meals are prepared, and icing and elevating devices are in place. Cryotherapy units can be purchased at the Chinook Bone and Joint Clinic – please contact us for details.

Preparatory Documents

See your primary care provider to discuss Goals of Care (Green Sleeve, Personal Directive).
